I want to add something to what I wrote because what I thought and said about
Mustafa has
been misrepresented, most probably mistakenly. I had no problem with Mustafa
voicing his opinions on Blind Democracy, although I personally disagreed with
just about everything he said. I never asked for, or wanted him, to be removed
from the list. What I had a problem with, was the nasty tone of the arguments
with him and their continuation when it became obvious that he was not going to
change his mind. I wanted the arguing to stop because it was so unpleasant and
mean spirited. I would have liked it if people could have allowed him to state
his views, unopposed. It wouldn't have harmed anyone to allow him to state his
religious views and his cultural preferences.

I am uncomfortable with Big Tech muting anyone. As for Mustafa, he continued to
email all of us privately so you didn't really mute him. What you accomplished
was to save us from deleting all of the emails that contained the argument
between the two of you. It was much easier to block him from my email program,
even though I've had to block a succession of his email addresses. However,
allowing these private monopolies to block everyone whose opinions they
disapprove of, is a whole different issue.

I just turned off the television where I was watching Out Front on CNN.
They read part of the statement that Twitter made with the announcement of
their Trump ban. I can't quote it, but they said that there was a lot of
chatter on their platform, especially among Trump followers, about another
attack on the capitol and on various statehouses on January 19, 20 and 21. They
were afraid that Trump would encourage that violence. They had already
suspended his account for the rest of his presidency, but they have now
suspended it permanently for using that account to incite violence. This news
program also said that word has come out of the White House that they are
looking into alternative means for the president to get out his statements and
videos. Let me add one more thing and I do not mean to express approval of
this. The courts have ruled any number of times that the first amendment means
that prohibitions of freedom of speech are illegal, but that no one is
obligated to facilitate speech with which they disagree. That means that
private organizations like Twitter or Facebook can legally ban anyone and any
ideas that they want.
The trouble with that is that when they manage to nearly monopolize the most
common ways to express oneself they effectively control what can and cannot be
said effectively violating freedom of speech. That is why I was so reluctant to
mute Mustafa. This list is only a very small forum and there are a lot of much
bigger forums where he can get a much larger audience, but still by muting him
I prohibited him from exercising his freedom of speech here. I never have felt
comfortable with that.

What are the implications of huge private tech companies barring people because
