Wow. We knew that Donald Trump was going to be a historically dishonest
president, but this is some scary stuff.
This afternoon, in his second official press briefing as Trump's press
secretary, Sean Spicer stated that Donald Trump firmly believes that between
3 and 5 MILLION people voted illegally in the presidential election "based
on studies and information that he has" -- but Spicer refused to provide
even a shred of evidence to suggest this claim is true (FACT CHECK: It's an
outrageous lie).
This comes on the heels of an absurd emergency press conference Spicer
called on Saturday in order to lie and gaslight the American public about
how many people attended the inauguration.

Miriam, this is NOT NORMAL. And we can't let the press treat it as if it's
acceptable.
If the media allows Trump's cronies to continue to spew their dangerous lies
directly to the public in real time, it is going to result in mass confusion
that will allow the Trump administration to get away with almost anything.
One network took extraordinary action on Saturday to handle this
administration's misinformation the right way. CNN intentionally decided to
tape Spicer's fact-free press conference instead of airing it live. And when
CNN did go back and air parts of it, they were able to fact check it in real
time, giving the public the tools we need to fight Trump's lies.
CNN made the right call on Saturday. Now, we need more media

outlets to follow suit. Sign our petition and tell the networks to stop
airing the Trump administration's press briefings live.
Some prominent members of the press understand how dangerous Trump's lies
are becoming. Here's what esteemed former CBS anchor Dan Rather posted on
Facebook shortly after Spicer's performance:
"The press has never seen anything like this before. The public has never
seen anything like this before. And the political leaders of both parties
have never seen anything like this before.
What can we do? We can all step up and say simply and without equivocation.
"A lie, is a lie, is a lie!" And if someone won't say it, those of us who
know that there is such a thing as the truth must do whatever is in our
power to diminish the liar's malignant reach into our society."
Dan Rather is exactly right. The networks cannot in good conscience transmit
these questionable press conferences directly to the public without taking
the time to find the many lies within them. If they continue to do so, they
are enabling the liars in the White House and failing to follow through on
their primary responsibility to educate and inform the public.
Donald Trump's misinformation is a unique and direct threat to our
