[blind-democracy] FW: How Secret Documents Become Published Stories

I must add to this Intercept email, the caution from Max Blumenthal whom I
heard yesterday, on the Useful Idiots podcast. He is a bit wary of the leaks
and of the coverage. The leaks appeared, just at the time when US supported
protests are taking place in Iran as a result of US sanctions against Iran. The
Intercept, in some of its coverage of news events, seems to have moved to the
right.

A REPORTER’S NOTE
How Secret Documents Become Published Stories

When The Intercept received a leaked archive of top-secret documents from the
Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, I knew we had a story unlike
anything we’d published before. Every country jealously guards its intelligence
secrets, and the Iranian government is one of the most secretive on the planet.
Across more than 700 pages, the documents showed in intimate detail how Iranian
spies had

outmaneuvered the United States to rise to dominance in Iraq in the years
after the U.S. occupation. I’d never seen anything like this archive and,
outside of a relatively small circle of spies and high-ranking government
officials, no one else had either.

Translating and analyzing hundreds of pages of Persian-language documents — as
well as traveling the world to confirm their contents and flesh out details —
was a laborious task that required a huge team. This week, I was proud to see
The Intercept and the New York Times publish a story on the cables that was
accompanied by Intercept stories about the

summit between members of Iran’s Quds Force and the Muslim Brotherhood, and
the benefits Iran reaped from the

U.S. invasion of Iraq. Our coverage was a historic achievement that

changes the way we understand Iran, as well as the long-term consequences of
the U.S. war in Iraq. As Iraqis continue to protest in the streets against the
corruption of their leaders, many of whom are closely tied to Iran, I was
gratified to hear that our articles were being translated into Arabic and read
at protest rallies in Baghdad.

Above all, the Iran Cables project shows that The Intercept has become a
powerful force for transparency, not just in the United States, but around the
world.
