As for BARD Express, supposedly it was developed as a way for people who
were not familiar with computers to download and transfer books in a
simple way. That does not make sense to me. I downloaded the software
and learned the basics of it by exploring the menus and now have
probably forgotten most of it because of disuse. It does not strike me
as simpler at all, just different. It just might be a bit more complex
than doing it in Windows. However, it does extract and transfer BARD
books. So if you are having trouble doing that in the way you have
become accustomed to then it just might be worth a try.

I never tried the BARD shortcut because I was afraid that it would alter the
way Cathy downloads books. Shows you just how uninformed I am.
As for "healthy"...all things are relative. I'm sure that if I were in your
situation I'd dream of the day when all I had was an arthritic back and low stamina. As
it is, I keep wishing I could be at the level of health a short ten years ago.
Back then I took three mile walks every day...nearly...
Today I walk the quarter mile to the mail box, and back. Then I pour a drink
of water and stagger to my recliner...where I often dose off.
And now I'd better get a move on. We have a client about 15 miles down the
road. That's almost next door.

There's also something up on BARD now called BARD Express which is a
program to help people download, transfer, and open books easily. But

I'm on the Jaws users' list and that's how I get help. Those folks are
usually too advanced for me, but there are some kind people who will
write out directions, step by step, and help me. One of them offered
to help me remotely, and he did several things for me. He was willing
to be paid, but wouldn't name a price so afgter many hours of help, I
sent him $200, figuring $20 an hour which is what Viola and the gal in
Pennsylvania charged me. This guy lives in Canada, has an unlimited
phone plan, and is incredibly patient and skillful. He actually has
some students whom he teaches, a few in UK. I'm also on the BARD Talk
list where one can get help with downloading books.

I've even lost my gmail link and try as I might I can never find how

She can reach it, but I haven't a clue how to do it with key commands.
There are a few pretty fair trouble shooters in the Peninsula Council
in Bremerton, but that's still a long hour drive, and often they can't
figure it out. I have one nagging issue that no one has solved. I
can download books from BARD, but I cannot transfer them to my
cartridge. Before my last repair, I could do it, but I think the man
who came out to the house and upgraded my computer changed something.
I had Viola help via remote, and while she was on-line we could do
it...once. But that was the only time. I bought one of the Texas
refurbished computers with NVDA, hoping to be able to become familiar
enough so we could teach a few clients. But so far my crowded days
are running into crowded weeks...and we're already wondering how we'll
get any time to travel to our daughter's new home in Ellensburg...they
moved in Christmas Day. Our son is getting married to a super nice woman, and
they are renting a home in Renton.
The plan, according to them, is that we'll come for the wedding and
stay a few days. But in mid August we will have our three grand
daughters spending several days(12, 10 and 6. And among it all is
Cathy's mother. She is becoming more and more confused. She's on
Section 8 housing and there is only one Adult Care facility this side
of Seattle that takes Section 8 folks. Needless to say they have a waiting
list that will outlive Dorothy.
She turns 92 on the 17th of July.
And in all of that, our very dear friends are expecting us to take a
four day cruise around Victoria, Vancouver and the Straight of Juan de
Fuca in mid September. She has been riddled with cancer and this will
very certainly be her last outing...if she is able to go. They really
want us to go. And at first we had said this looked good, but we
needed to look at our schedule and our finances.
Well, the schedule is straight out of Hades, and after promising all
three of our children that when they married we would pay for a week
honeymoon in Hawaii, James asked if the offer were still good. What could we
say..."No!
Just your sisters got the trip. Here's fifty bucks, go to dinner".
So that was our nest egg that we'd planned to spend on the Victoria cruise.
Hawaiian trips are much more costly than they were 20 years ago when
Renae and Brian married, and even more than Jennifer and Don's wedding
back in 1988. And both Cathy and I had good paying jobs.
Sigh...
But we have a backup plan, if our friends will go for it. So all is
not lost.
And then my cousin in Cottage Grove, Minn. called and said, "Are you
planning another cousin reunion?" Three years ago we had twelve of
our twenty four cousins gather at the Timber House restaurant in Quilcene.
These are the grandchildren of our Ludwig grandparents. My sisters
and I are quite a bit older than the rest of the group, I am some 9
years older than the next grandchild.
. Anyway I said it would not happen if I had to plan it, but they
would be welcome to stay at our house if they did come out for the
Railroad Lover group they belong to. I think that may mean we have
just committed the last weekend in September...Ho Boy!

Actually, after wondering, I googled Thom Hartman to see if he and
Hedges ever exchanged views. There are several listed, but I only
began listening to one transcript. They seemed to be on the same page.
As for Wolff, I am not happy with his shorter format. I listen
mostly for his updates, not the interviews, so I used to only listen
to the first half hour. Oh well, when Thom Hartman had an hour
program on RT, it was far more interesting than when they cut him to
half an hour. Now I get his radio show out of Portland, at 9:00 A.M.
PDT. He is also on DISH TV, on Free Speech TV at 9:00 A.M. PDT.
They also list him at channel 348, but don't give a network or time.
When I have time...which is seldom, I google the people I like to
listen to.
Alternative Radio had Howard Zinn, speaking at Reed College back in
1995.
He could have been talking about the world today.
But I truly enjoyed Zinn. Gentle humor with a bite in it.

style, and have gained good information from him. Thom Hartman has
