My father worked in a factory that made women's hats. It was grueling work,
using dangerous chemicals. I didn't understand it but the workers were given
"bodies", these soft pieces of fabric that were sewn into shapes. They had
to "block them, whatever that means, using all these chemicals, so that the
end product was a stiff firm shape. Blocking involved pulleys, ropes, etc.
and was very hard labor.
the hats were given to the women who trimmed them with ribbons, flowers, or
whatever. If you walked into the millinary district in Manhattan, in the
west thirties, there was a smell of banana. That was the banana oil, one of
the chemicals used in the factories. My father said that the stench was so
strong up close that it felt as if your lungs were being torn out.

I might have lost it over the years, but you note your father was a factory
worker here. What type of work did he do? Just curious.
BTW I worked in a few factories in my day, but not long. I never was good at
the repetive sort of numbness of it all.
I wasn't lazy, physically speaking as I always back in the day including
working for my dad in construction did heavy labor from digging footings
through hammering nails, etc.
I did like that sort of work better because it wasn't totally repetive.
But, even though he was a general contractor, homebuilder we converted our
family barn in to a sort of factory of sorts even in the mid-sixties. We
fabricated, while customized, sections of homes. Then layed them out on a
big and jigged table and then put them together with compressed power
nailers and stablers. In fact I'm living in the family home, which some
would consider a mansion that my younger brother, Greg and I put together by
these methods in my senior year of high school, during the Christmas break.
This wasn't a "modular home" per se but again sections were pre-frabricated
and then assembled on site.
But, I digress. Did your dad work in the textile industry?
I btw have a nice Cashmir dress coat made by a friend's father back in the
fifties.
I paid in the eighties big bucks to have it re-lined by a tailer. But, it is
about my own age and still splended.
I gave it to my father and then now my youngest brother, thirteen years
younger than me has it.
It is remarkable though as this garment is now more than sixty years old as
to how durable and beautiful it still is.
I wish I could find again my Jewish pal who gave me his dad's coat so I
could get it back to him as a family momento.
It is kind of complicated as to why he gave it to me in the first place.
But, we were pals in Detroit in 1980 or so and he moved to Houston around
then and said he didn't need a winter coat like that.

for opposition to Donald Trump:
. Schumer, who's just about to turn 66, grew up in Brooklyn and went
to the same high school as Bernie Sanders. Then their lives diverged:
Schumer, the smartiest of the smartypants, got a perfect score on the
SATs and then went to Harvard and Harvard Law School. He was elected
to the New York State Assembly at 23, the U.S. Congress at 29, and the
U.S. Senate at 47. He's never had any adult job outside elected office.
. He possesses the same impressive political acumen as Hillary
Clinton's 2016 campaign, sagely explaining "For every blue-collar
Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate
Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in

. Schumer's done more than anyone except Bill and Hillary Clinton to
