An eviction deferred

A quick update on our eviction case: Evgenia and I just got out of court. I
think we got what may be the best possible deal, given the shitty and
uncertain situation we were put in by our greedy landlord and the lack of a
blanket eviction moratorium.
We ended up settling, agreeing to leave by the end of July in return for him
cancelling a large portion of our rent. As we see it, the settlement skews
largely in our favor, although it does still force us out of an affordable
apartment during a pandemic just a few months after Evgenia gives birth and
ultimately gets the landlord what he wants: to clear us out so that he can
jack up the rent for the next tenants (although it will take him a long time
to recoup his losses). So this deal is not justice, but it's a good outcome
among a multitude of much worse and possibly very painful options.
I'm gonna write more about our pandemic eviction saga later next week. But
right now I'm gonna crack open a beer and smoke a joint and, uhm, maybe
light some Shabbat candles later. Gotta thank the gods somehow, even for the
little victories.
