Good Morning Puzzlers, This problem is from Mario Lang's puzzle web page at http://delysid.org:80/chess/epd.cgi and is reported to be from Fred Reinfield's book "Win At Chess" 1958. Problem WAC001 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- White to move FEN Problem Setup: 2rr3k/ pp3pp1/ 1nnqbN1p/ 3pN3/ 2pP4/ 2P3Q1/ PPB4P/ R4RK1 w - - 0 1 Short Algebraic Problem Setup: White: Kg1, Qg3, Ra1, Rf1, Bc2, Ne5, Nf6, Pa2, Pb2, Pc3, Pd4, Ph2 Black: Kh8, Qd6, Rc8, Rd8, Be6, Nb6, Nc6, Pa7, Pb7, Pc4, Pd5, Pf7, Pg7, Ph6 The best move is: 1. Qg6 Principle: The square g6 is the key to this problem. White has two good mating prospects through g6: 1. Ng6# or 1. Qg6 followed by 2. Qh7# But the F-Pawn guards the vital g6 square. So the problem is how to remove that guard. There are two choices: 1. Ng6+ fxg6 (forced) 2. Qg6 Bg8 and the Queen mate is foiled. or: 1. Qg6 threatening mate at h7 1... fxg6 (removing that guard!) 2. Ng6#
