You're in luck. Both Chess-wise and Shredder are accessible chess programs
available on IOS devices. I have not upgraded to IOS5 yet, so don't know if
Chess-wise works well on the latest and greatest version, and I don't own
Shredder,but I haven't seen anything on the viphone list saying they don't
work with IOS5.

I just read the Wiki page on chess notation and think I'll give it a
whirl. If I make a mistake, I hope it would be pointed out so I can
learn. My first move as white will be to move the pawn in front of my
queen two squares forward. I think the notation is just D4. I'm not so
sure if that is just it though. Correct me if I'm wrong.
in other news, I wonder how everyone here plays their chess game. Does
everyone have a physical accessible chess board that they move the
pieces to, or is it all memorized in the gray matter, or either method
depending on personal preference? For those that do the latter, kudos;
that is insanely impressive. As for myself, I am using the former
method and hope that our cat here doesn't decide to play chess and throw
a monkey wrench between our game. Hey, where's my rook!
Also, how many different accessible chess boards are there? I think I
have the traditional full-sized chess board with the white squares
raised higher than the black squares, white pieces with the dimples on
top, and pegs under every peace to prevent slippage. Ever since I
started playing chess and became fascinated with the game, I imagine of
different ways to play the game. Maybe a smaller chess board with much
shorter pieces that can be discreetly explored with both thumbs. I
often feel self-conscious whenever playing against a sighted person. It
would be nice to privately feel things out on my little personal chess
board then make the move on the main board. I really don't want my
opponent noticing the possible moves I trace out with my fingers. Could
this be addressed somehow? I hope so. And the most outrageous thought
that I entertained was to have an iOS chess app that was accessible.
Now that would be nice.
anyway, Alvin, those are just some of my thoughts that I'm putting out
there to an experienced group of chess players who are blind just to see
what comments it would draw up if any.
So my move again is D4.
