Chess Article #36
Bughouse Chess
From: http://www.playe4.com/index.html

Bughouse chess, or simply bughouse, is a chess variant played by
four players with two chessboards, with every captured piece is
transferred to the second board. Bughouse is a very fast chess
variant usually played between 5 to 10 minutes.

Origin of the Name "Bughouse"

The term "bughouse" is a slang word for mental institution, and it
derived from the messy looks of the game, with its high speed time-
control, the constant movement of pieces from one chess board to
another and the common exchange of words between the team members.
The chess variant is also called Siamese Chess (implying to the
twin boards) and exchange or transfer chess.

Bughouse Chess Rules

Bughouse chess is played by two chess teams. Each team consists of
two players who sit next to one another; one team member plays
White while the other plays Black. Basically, bughouse follows
standard chess rules and the game may end when either one of the
games is over due to a checkmate, resign, time run out or illegal
move. However, the following exceptions apply:

- When a player captures a chess piece, he moves it to his team
member. The latter may place the piece on any empty square on
the board on his turn or keep it in reserve, visible to the
rest of the players, and continue playing regularly. Thus, a
player on one board may ask his team member to sacrifice a
certain piece for the benefit of the game taken on his board.
- Pawns transferred from the neighboring chessboard can only be
placed on b through g ranks. Though pawns can be promoted,
once they are captured they return to their original value.
- Players can talk with each other during play, but they cannot
touch the pieces on the other board.
