Sorry, I should have elaborated.

I don't change the incorrectly spelled words when they're publisher errors. However, when I'm validating, I do use the spellchecker to catch OCR errors. For example, my OCR program sometimes puts the letter i in place of the letter l. If it comes up in my spellchecker, I can check the copy of the book to see if it's an OCR error and then fix it. The spellchecker is also helpful for when my OCR program inserts dashes in the middle of words where they shouldn't be. For example, in verbs, it often puts a dash before the ing. I usually catch most of these if I read through the book but I sometimes miss a few.

However, I admit that, if the book is published in the United Kingdom, I don't bother with spellchecking it because of the very different spelling.

Hi Christina,

If a book has a misspelled word in it, we need to leave the word as is, in order to put as close to an exact copy of the book as we can manage into the collection. I hate doing this! I REALLY want to fix misspelled words, but we can't... Deleting junk characters, correcting errors that the scanner or OCR program introduced, adding missing pages, deleting duplicate pages - those are all great!

Thanks Carrie

Hello.
This might sound obvious but a good validator/proofreader should correct any errors he/she finds in the book. This includes anything from misspelled words to extra junk characters or missing pages or chapter titles. I say this because validators don't always do this. If a validator has any questions about a book, he or she can contact the submitter or, if that person isn't available, this discussion list. This is a group of very helpful and informed volunteers who have all sorts of experience and resources to share.

Hi,

I agree, reading a book from cover to cover does make for the
cleanest copy of the book. I'd like to add one thing to what E has said.
Please make sure that all chapter headings are present before removing
headers. If chapter headings are just numerals, and no words, they often
won't scan. If chapter headings are missing, it is often easy to tell this
and where to put them, before removing headers, because books rarely have
running headers on the pages where chapter headings appear. If you remove
headers before accounting for all chapter headings, you may well not know
where to insert missing ones.

To our new volunteers,
First welcome welcome. Now for you validators here are a few ideas:
Whatever you use to validate, please use a spell checker when you
start. You can then check for missing pages, remove the title and
author at the tops of pages and read through the book. A spell
checker finds some things. Reading a book cover to cover is what
really works when validating though. So please pick a book you find
interesting so you are willing to read it.

Again welcome.
E.
