When I scanned cookbooks from small presses, I lined up a sighted
proofer to whom I would mail the books. Most proofers find cookbooks
boring. Accuracy is extremely important in cookbooks so verifying
portions of the scan is necessary with the source material. Also, the
press is so small that Bookshare is likely to never have an agreement
with them so this will be the only version ever in the collection.
Downloading a book on hold severely disrupts the production process of
my books. I do live in Chicago so most people in the country receive
my books in a few days. A scanner outside a major city sending a book
to a proofer in a rural area means the mailing of the book could take
considerably longer as it bounces from sorting center to sorting
center, often in major cities.

held for a specific proofer and one is being held for staff.
The only way to release a book is to write to staff and ask for the hold
to be removed. Mostly, they won’t remove a hold unless you’re the one
who
put the hold on in the first place.
Sometimes staff removes holds that have languished for weeks and the
proofer hasn’t picked it up.
Of course you “can” download a book with a hold—there is nothing
physically preventing you from doing that. The real issue is “should”
you
download a book with a hold, and the anser is “NO”. There is a reason

the holds and the hold needs to be honored.
