Many times we've discussed the fact that as we remain true to the books we
scan and validate, we dutifully reproduce the errors in the text? Was it
Jamie Yates who wanted to write a disclaimer that errors were the fault of
the publisher and not the Bookshare volunteer? In my case, with Misha's
findings and the comments of Kelley's Gaelic teacher, the f acute is clearly
a mistake. This time it's not my fault that I can't reproduce it. I'll be
forced to write it as puifin and the readers will see it written correctly
according to the Irish language and incorrectly in terms of representing the
text accurately. Ha ha!
Misha, What a find! I put in the search words you suggested, and there it
was, a most wonderful book! Jaws didn't take to it as I did. He'd only read
the page numbers but not the text of the pages shown.
I was sure I'd be writing to tell you The Book The Complete Guide to
Ireland's Birds was on it's way to my house from Amazon, and then, what do I
find but that 2 copies are available starting at $97.62! Whoah that's too
expensive! I'm not stopped in my quest for this book, but definitely slowed
down and it's too late tonight to dig any deeper. The challenge is on,
though and I'm on the hunt to find it at a more affordable price.
Your example of how to research the word puifin and these birds was a great
demonstration of how to search more productively on Google. I performed the
same search substituting puffin for puifin and got thousands of results
instead of 2, but it's your search that led me to the most beautiful book,
which I imagine will be a nightmare to scan. I actually found mention of
the very Island which is the setting of my book, Skeilic off the coast of
County Claire. I also found a site called Images of the birds of Ireland.
These can be magnified hugely and I expect to willingly cause myself serious
eye strain browsing through the digital pictures taken by a dedicated couple
who share their pictures on their site, and sell Calendars featuring the
Irish bird of the month and more I didn't have time to look at tonight. They
have clear, magnificent photos of over 600 species of birds!
Thank you Kelley and Misha for taking my sincere curiosity seriously and
helping me along this side trip as I continue to read about the monks in
medieval Ireland.
