Hi Jill,
It depends. Where are the rest of the page numbers at? If all page numbers except those at the start of a chapter are at the top, then yes, move the page number to the top, making sure a blank line follows.

For example

12

Chapter 2
The Hangman

If however all other page numbers are at the bottom, then the number should be left at the bottom.

Again, mimic the pattern of the rest of the book. Patterns the computer can follow make its task that much easier and the writing of the code that much easier for the programmer.

HTH,
Jake

When scanning a book for submission, I remove the headers, preserving the page numbers. When a book has the page number at the bottom of the page when a new chapter is started on that page, I have made sure that there is a blank line before and after the page number. Is there any reason to think it would be better if that number were placed at the top of the page instead, then leaving a couple of blank lines before the chapter name?

Hi Robin,
Yes, the BookShare tool will attempt to remove running headers. At times the process can inadvertantly remove chapter headings. To prevent this simply mimic the headers in the rest of the book.

For example:

Let's use John Grisham's book The Runaway Jury.

If on every even numbered page (left hand page) it says The Runaway Jury
then you should place that above the chapter title if the chapter starts on an even numbered page.

Likewise if on odd numbered pages (right hand side) it says John Grisham and the chapter starts on an odd numbered page then you should place John Grisham above the chapter title.

Another thing the BookShare process attempts to do is identify page numbers.

Sometimes the numbers are placed in the header information on the first line of the page. Sometimes they are placed at the bottom. If all page numbers are placed at the bottom you should leave them as is.

If page numbers are placed in the header, except on a page where a new chapter starts, in which case its either not present or at the bottom, you should move the number into its correct position next to the header you inserted to protect the chapter title.

All of this probably sounds very confusing. I've tried to use chapter title to mean the point in the book where it says
Chapter 1
The Dark Door
or whatever the case may be. I've tried to use the word header only when refering to something that appears on every page, or every other page.

If you have more questions, please let us know.

The main point in the whole process is to attempt to make the book flow in the same format.

HTH,
Jake

Hi,

Do I understand correctly that headings at the top of the page will automatically be removed...headings such as chapter titles or numbers? What should I do to prefer these (either chapter title or number "chapter 1" "chapter 2" etc) from being removed?
