I think you're misunderstanding Pratik, or else I'm
misunderstanding you. I think his line about
hyphenated words doesn't mean to leave them that way
but means that it's understandable to close them.
In books, footnotes are at the bottom of pages, and do
not interrupt sentences. If a footnote interrupts a
sentence, then it should be moved to the bottom of the
page. I space two or three lines down and put the
footnote in small font, which is usually is in books.
A sighted reader can either read the footnote or skip
it. I confess that if the footnote explains a word, as
in the Kipling poems I'm reading, I go to the bottom
of the page and read what it means. If the footnote is
merely a reference, showing the source, I don't read
it at all. I read explanatory footnotes when I come to
the end of the page, even if the sentence at the
bottom of the page continues on the next page. Indeed,
sometimes long footnotes continue on the next page
I much prefer footnotes to be at the end of the book,
and I see more and more authors are doing that,
especially with explanatory footnotes, which they put
in a special section by chapter. Then the reader can
read them or not, as they choose. The ones in The
Speckled Monster, (and the author's writing,)were so
interesting that I read them all.
I admit that sometimes, though rarely, I have to go
back and re-read the line that had the footnote if
i've interrupted my reading to read the footnote.
I would think that a Braille reader could do what a
sighted reader does. I don't know how a listening
reader handles that, but I would think that if the
footnotes is the last thing on the page, after line
spaces, it would be read at the end of the page,
unless the reader did something.
