I am glad this subject is being discussed. And that so many of you are taking
the time to monitor your scan quality as you do the book.
I have really been enjoying the books I have been downloading to read. Thank
you all very much!

To me, the practice of removing the header text and ensuring the page number is
where it needs to be is, or should be, just the way to go as we scan a book,
and monitor it page by page, to submit it for the Bookshare collection.

To have to do this as a proofreader seems like work that would be best to have
been done in the initial scanning operation.

I have done it the other way, to just scan multiple pages at a time, in repeat
scanning mode, and have then later discovered all these issues when I go back,
and then I'm sitting there fixing them anyway. And in many cases, this is
exactly what I find when I download a book to proofread for the collection. So
I guess I am saying that I am an advocate for removing headers and for doing it
as you scan the book. Or at least before you submit it.

So for me, it feels like I get the best result to remove headers as I go.

I should also say, that I do leave in the headings at the top of page when
scanning the pages of an INDEX.

I agree with what was said earlier as to why removing headers is a good idea.
They are not essential to us who are going to read the book without the need
for a visual reminder at the top of the page as to what the book is. Page
number yes, header no.

I also started to do this, and find that I like the result... to use the ranked
spelling as I go. Say every 20 pages or so. I really like it when I can avoid
tons of fixes at the end of the project

Wow, saying all this reminds me. I have some scanning to do. I better get back
to it! <g>

Thanks, everyone.
Rik

That's exactly what I do also, Jill. It's not difficult for me to do it that
way. I've just recently begun changing the font of Chapter heading . I do that
as I go, also.

I suspect everyone has a different process of scanning and proofreading.

Blessings.

Because I am a braille reader and because I read the book in its entirety
when scanning and usually do so when proofing, I remove headers by hand as I
go. As I have a braille display, this is very easy to do and I don't trust the
stripper on this at all. They are a real nuisance when left in and particularly
so when garbled as is often the case.

You are right Cindy, listening to a book read by synthetic speech, or
reading it in Braille, one does not have the privilege of skipping a running
header.

But, personally, I don't see anything wrong with leaving them in.

They are short and vaguely annoying but in the case of story or chapter
titles, can be very helpful in tracking one's progress as Roger pointed out in
an earlier message. This is especially helpful when sleep overtakes the reader
and his/her book goes on merrily reading away while the reader blissfully
dreams dreams..
They are a pain to remove as they usually reside on the same line as the
honorable page number. And can take up a lot of time removing them.

In short, I for one would be in favor of just leaving the blooming things
alone.

I'd like to hear others views on this: running headers, good or bad.

    Thanks.
    Bob

Valerie, we are supposed to delete them, but be careful to leave
the page number.

As a sighted person, do you pay attention to them? I never do.
smile. Maybe if I were reading a book of short stories I'd use them to find a
particular story, but otherwise I just ignore them, I think those members who
listen to books don't have that opportunity if the headers are present. I don't
know how they affect Braille readers.

              Dear Bud;

I just noticed that you also are a ham radio operator. I am also
in my call
              sign is: N0HSJ
<br>I have a question probably as much for the list as for you,
and that was
talking about all headers have been deleted. Do you mean at the
top of the
page were sometimes it has the title and/or the name of the
chapter? I have
not been deleting these, as I think they provide visual cues for
sighted
readers, but if I should be deleting them, I will start with my
next book.
Or, is it okay to do it whichever way and just make a note in the
              submissions?

Thanks as always for everyone's help!
