My pet peeve is seeing then used instead of than in writing, and I have seen it in some books. Example, "I have more then you do." Also, "exact same". We used to have a teacher who used those two words and we made fun of her. Now I am seeing it in books.

Hi,
I am in full agreement with you. I have seen people misuse to and too.
I get so mad when people say "me and my friend" or when people
(including teachers) use your for you're instead of the right one. I
agree with what you said about the immigrants.

Hi all,

Well, actually, Gary, you're right in one way. Publishers and authors
are scattered in their ways of dealing with dialogue. However, I got
the impression that she asked because either the paragraph marks in her
book had been munged somehow and she was trying to recreate them, or
she wanted to know what the standard is.

You're right that as proofers we can't correct stuff in a book that is
printed there, even if it is nonstandard usage. However, if you're in
a position to insert paragraph marks, then you do need to know
something about how it's done. the standard will at least give you a
yard stick by which to measure any major corrections of this type.
Besides, Gary, I had a lot of fun writing that dialogue. It just
piqued my crazy sense of humor.

Seems most things are nonstandard in grammar and usage any more. The
numbers of times I've heard people misusing I and me is astonishing.
These are people who should know better! Used to be that it was "me"
that got musused. Now it's "I". People say, "There are two doughnuts
in that bag, one for you, and one for I." I'm serious! Is it any
wonder immigrants have a hard time learning English if we can't figure
out what's right ourselves?
