[bksvol-discuss] question on footnotes and endnotes

I am looking at a nonfiction book to scan, but this book has footnotes and a lot of endnotes. 

Footnotes are * asterisks, and endnotes are numbered and superscipted.
Do I treat them both the same? Enclosing them in square brackets either with an asterisk or number?
