[bksvol-discuss] Re: question about the language of the bestseller initiative

As someone who teaches a music appreciation class at a community college, I
have learned over the years that the clearer my class syllabus is the more
smoothly my class runs. While I certainly appreciate the fact that BookShare
is not required to explain their every move to us and certainly should not
do so, the more we as volunteers can learn about the mission of the
organization the better. I was certainly taken aback when the only response
I received as to why Laura Ingraham's Power To The People was not included
in the October New York Times' bestseller list was that Carrie didn't like
reading her work. I know that I as a volunteer will never validate certain
books because I either find them uninteresting or objectionable. I won't
make a big deal about it, I will simply put my efforts into projects such as
volume one of the Elvis biography I just finished and thoroughly enjoyed. At
the time I received Carrie's message, I thought she was an employee of
BookShare. I later learned that she was a volunteer. It seems that she is
now an employee. How things change! (smile) Congrads on the new job, by the
way. I realize that the power of BookShare is that I can purchase Power To
The People and scan it for submission to the program. I can go to the
library and check out the book if I wish. If someone else scans the book, I
can offer to validate it. I certainly don't want to be too hard on Carrie
for not wanting to thoroughly immerse herself in a book she probably won't
enjoy. I do, however, wish to see a book that was for a time #1 on the New
York Times bestseller list receive the best scan and validation possible. If
someone else wants to scan the book I will be glad to take a stab at
validating it, although I understand there may be some charts in the book.
Perhaps a sighted person needs to take a look at it. If a sighted person
would like to take a crack at validating it, perhaps I should offer to scan
the book. At this point I just want to read it and I'll be more than happy
to do my part to get it into the collection. Thanks.

Here I go again, taking the unpopular course.

This organization has staff and volunteers. As volunteers, our job is to add
books to the collection. We can, of course, make suggestions.

The staff of this organization goes way above and beyond what is needed to
run a volunteer corps. They tell us much more than is normal. It isn't our
responsibility to know what moneys go to what project, or what policy is, or
who does what job, unless it makes it easier to do our job. We're only
volunteers, and although we like it, the staff isn't really accountable to
us.

This isn't meant as a flame. I've worked with and for volunteer
organizations both as a staff member and as a volunteer, and although I
don't always like the way something is going, it isn't really my
responsibility to worry about it.

Please accept this in the spirit it was intended. We volunteers are doing
all we can to make the organization better, but we aren't staff, and
sometimes we need to remember that.

Kudos to the staff and volunteers for doing a bang-up job for one of the
best organizations I've ever volunteered for.

Good idea.

I will develop a policy with the staff which incorporates their input as
well as what I've read here. When we've got it, I'll send it out to the
lists and put it in the volunteer manual.

Lisa

initiative

Hi all,

Recent discussion revolving around the Bookshare effort to quickly place
current bestsellers into the collection has prompted me to write. If there
is a specific mission statement or synopsis paragraph about this endeavor,
I'd like to see it. In other words, I want to know exactly what the project
is supposed to do. Has a certain amount of money been set aside to be put
towards the purchase of bestsellers? If so, is this money to be spent on
bestsellers regardless of book content. Or, is this more an informal effort,

one where Bookshare is doing its best to incorporate the popular books of
now into its collection as quickly as possible, and if some don't make it,
it's not a big deal.

Scott
