It seems that they were, in fact, vertical tabs, because when I did a find
and replace for ^11, Word tells me it replaced over seven thousand of them
with a space. I did this in a different file than the one I started
proofreading, and the original is still in tact. When I asked JAWS to look
for ^13, it just showed me blank lines, so I'm pretty sure they were/are
vertical tabs. The manual doesn't say if the conversion process does
anything to vertical tabs, although it does say it removes extra blank lines
and spaces.
Since I can't see the screen, I don't know what a vertical tab does,
although the person who scanned the book tells me that the example I showed
him of a vertical tab in the text is a line break in the book.
All that to say, I can remove the vertical tabs, but I'm worried of messing
with the original formatting of the book and I'm unsure of whether or not
said formatting would be preserved after the conversion process.
Thank you for pointing me towards the ^11.
Any advice on whether I should remove them in the file I check in to
BookShare? (hope that made sense)

Are they line breaks (which is a ^13) or is JAWS correctly identifying them
as vertical tabs (which are a ^11)? I'm certain that the converter does not
removed line breaks (^13), but I don't know what it does with a vertical
tab.
If they are vertical tabs you should be able to get rid of them if you use
Word by doing a search and replace, searching for ^11 and then replacing
each one with a blank space. I hope that makes sense! smile.
If they are line breaks, that's tricker and requires a wildcard search in
Word that seeks out line breaks that occur before a new line that starts
with a lower case letter. If that's what you need, let me know and I'll put
a search sequence that should work together for you and post it.
