I like all of Mary's suggestions though it might be even better if we could get a warning when we had fifty characters left or something in the short synopsis field. As I suggested earlier, I believe there is a better solution which is a single longer synopsis which goes both places. This could be a maximum number of characters but could include a warning when you are approaching the point of no submission.
