Jim, How much do you want for your PacMate, and is it in good condition? I might be interested. You can write me offlist at: siss52@xxxxxxxxxxx Thanks, Sue S.----- Original Message ----- From: "Homme, James" <james.homme@xxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, May 28, 2009 5:53 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: proofing with PacMate Hi Evan, It is possible that in the JAWS folders of your PacMate there would be a file whose name is something like braille.ini. You may be able to look at that file and follow its format to get those formatting characters to show up on your Braille display. In case you know anyone who is interested, I have a PacMate QX that would like a good home. Jim ---------- Jim Homme, Usability Engineering. 412-544-1810. "A vision without a task is but a dream. It has anon-the-fly braille translator in it which allows for reading in grade 2braille while leaving the original file unchanged. It is one of my favoritethings about the device. There is no need to read in computer braille. I have been proofreading Bookshare books on the Pac Mate for three years andafter transferring the read files to both MS Word and K1000, I can say thatthe files are unaltered except, of course, for any alterations while I wascorrecting mistakes or any other changes that I myself made. (You do have toremember that if you type anything into the file, you must type in grade 1braille, not grade 2. But you'll see any of your typing instantly translatedinto grade 2.) You can turn this on-the-fly braille translator off, but I rarely do. As to Pocket Word, Things may have changed since I got my Pac Mate, and it has not been updated recently, but when I got it, Pocket Word had a file size limit which would not allow for reading any but very small books with it. On the other hand, as James Homme said, FSEdit handles rtf files. The one thing I wish the Pac Mate could do that it cannot that theBrailleNote apparently can is show format characters on the braille display.I would very much like to have that capability on the Pac Mate--or to find out that I am wrong and that it will display those characters after all. Changing file formats can introduce errors ofvarious kinds. Make sure you edit in computer braille rather than having the file translated into grade two braille please. Again translating between grade one and two will introduce translation errors and so ought to be avoided. Good luck. E.
