Hi Ann, For what it's worth, I agree with you. As I've said more than once, mistakes happen. I make my share, but it bothers me that we pay money to read material that has many scanning errors (die for the) and so on. We have books in the collection that are nearly unreadable. I can't tell you how many times I've been reading in the living room and have had to stop reading and go into the computer room to look at the Braille display in order to figure out a word or sentence. Granted, they may be books submitted prior to the development of submission criteria presently in place. Many of them are being replaced, and for this I'm grateful. My love of reading outweighs my disdain for poorly scanned and/or proofread books, and I do believe that the majority of us do our very best and are conscientious about our efforts. You are correct, Ann, what we do as volunteers is a job. *smile* Blessings. Yes, yes, me, I was their token blind person for some years. While I was a member, I learned a lot about volunteerism. We were lectured to about it, as new volunteers and members to the Junior League. Part of all those lectures involved impressing upon us that when one volunteers, one should treat it as if one were being payed for the job. One should do one's best and fulfill all the duties, yada, yada, yada. Perhaps new and old volunteers need to be treated to the same lectures? I mean, the Junior League, world wide, is responsible for doing a whole heck of a lot of fantastic good work. Women who are members, pride themselves on their responsibility, reliability, and so on and on. <smiling> I think that volunteers should be required to read the books they proof. I also agree that volunteers have no business *not* belonging to this list. This is how you get news, how you get help, how you contact people to deal with certain problems, and so on and on. Nope, they have no business not being a member of this list. Sorry, this sounds harsh, but folks, this is a job we're doing here. This, my friends, is the kind of experience that goes on a resume. No, don't you *dare* laugh! You young folks in college, don't forget to put your work for Bookshare on your resume. Here's a sample of duties you perform. scan printed materials into computer files; while checking for accuracy and making sure all pages are present and accounted for. Proofread books; while reading the text making sure page numbers are present, making sure titles and publishing info are present, reading for accuracy. You have to have reasonable computer skills. You must be familiar with both OCR software and wordprocessing software. There are subtler things too, like working together with others, doing your work in a timely way, being responsible for what you do. All these are skills which are valuable, don't discount them. Enough of my haranguing. I'm off to bed soon, but this here's an important job, and it is worth putting on a resume. Ann P. -- AAnn K.
