Hi Katie, E. and all,

Dickens had it right, the first thing we do is kill all the lawyers. And Mr. Bumble understood that the "law is a ass". However, given all that, you might want to try your local Bar Association and if that does not get you anywhere try the state or national bar (American Bar Association). But you must be patient and talk simple. I was once at a meeting of the tax section of the American Bar Association in which these "tax lawyers" voted that there was no such thing as a tax specialist or specialty. For real. Now I admit that was 43 years ago but as a lawyer's brat I have seen nothing in those 40 years that makes me believe things have improved. There are, however, some good guys out there but like looking for a good schrink you have to keep shopping around until you find a good one.
An Open letter to the ABA would not hurt and most of our Senators and Representatives, state and federal, are or were lawyers.

You could try the head of your area, state, or national Voc Rehab but there too are problems since their provence is limited by laws that are sometimes unaided by funding. There is or was supposed to be a section of non-Voc Rehab for folks like me who have been disaabled for years but have not qualified for voc rehab because I have not been nor could ever be employable in a full time or significant part time position. There were supposed to be programs that would make it possible to get programs like K 1000 or other adaptive programs to make life easier but that part of the program was never funded. Just as Medicare's drug program is taking funding from Medcaid (ask you pharmacist about the Medicaid cutbacks), programs that are not funded have to get the money from somewhere or they are not available in any significant way. So Lawyers, who write these laws, can set up a way for lawyers to do pro bono work but try to get one to do it. If it is a headline getting case or one where later payback is possible it is easy but finding ones for the other type take a patient hunter. They are there - you just have to find them.

Good luck,

Amy
omst.

HI E,

When this all started I tried working with the NFB and it didn't really help
a lot. Oh well, off to write the folks who represent me...

Call you Congressman's office and that of your local legislator. They
usually have people doing follow up for folks having issues in their
districts. Also get in touch with local chapters of your state blindness
organizations in some cases. ACB and NFB have members who are layers. Try
calling their national offices for references. I may be a serious
person. I also get a lot done and take extremely unkindly to being treated
badly by a government for whom I am paying taxes.

Hi E,

You know I have called at least a dozen lawyers in this area and non of
them
will take an over payment case. I got the idea that they didn't see any
money in it. I even told a couple of the offices I spoke with I was happy
to
pay for their services. Now, if you are trying to get money from them they
will take a case in a heart beat. I maybe am going to have to get a state
representitive involved like I believe you said. Any ideas are appreciated.

Do you have a lawyer? Amazing how much more likely you are to get action
when you show up with one in tow. There are certainly lawyers who work
with Social Security disability cases.
