It's also possible that since they were Optional hyphens that the spell
checker ignored them.

It's possible that the split words were compound
words. Therefore, each half of the word would be a
genuine word by itself and so the spell checker
wouldn't find it mis-spelled -- whereas if a word like
  cor pulent  were split, the spell-checker probably
would catch it (he word comes to mind because I've
been reading about Henry VIII)
