Hi all,

Smart quotes replace the double quote with single quotes in certain places, and they have different ASCII code designations that don't translate well into Braille, so you get garbage when you use them for translation purposes. I kept getting this capital O with an accent for every quote and apostrophe in the book in the subj line of this message. <smiling> When I read it in Braille, it looked really weird, and I couldn't find the actual words in between the O's. Then, I tried speech, and I sat here laughing my head off because the poor synthe sounded like it was a puppy going "ow, ow, ow, ow,..." in between words. Needless to say, it didn't add to the book at all.

We've switched to Ice by McBain, just in case people don't remember that in light of this discussion of the faults of Let's Hear It For The Deaf Man.
