Chiming in on Valerie's recollection:

This is an example of a practice that was designed to balance the different
Bookshare readerships where visual format, text-to-speech output, and Braille
conversion all must be held in balance. Understanding that these sorts of
compromises have been agreed upon through long practice and discussion the most
helpful next steps are to help members understand ways to best navigate through
them. For example, turning on (or off) punctuation vocalization in a
screenreader.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: index question

I think when this came up a year ago several of us decided to do space hyphen
space before indents on sublistings in indeces so it would present better for
visual readers, knowing blind readers would do a word search. Many people with
dyslexia or severe physical impairments cannot type word searches easily, so it
is the least harmful solution.

This index, and many I have seen over time, has, for sintace, the entry for
DISNEY then beneath that would be the sub-entries for Disney things such as
Goofy
Dumbo
Cinderella

So those would be in their own entries under D for Dumbo and G for
Goofy but they would also be under Disney.

Is that making sense?

Most (all?) indexes are allphabetically arranged. The one in your book should
be, so there shouldn 't really be subentries.
