I agree with Jackie that the hold for option should only be allowed for a limitted time. We have one week to validate books unless we make a conscious decision to renew the book for validation. There is a five book limit for validators. It seems inconsistent to me that books can sit forever on the step 1 page with "hold for" in the title and the rest of the volunteer community is expected to leave it alone indefinitely. Having said that, I have had two books held for me in the last few weeks. One, the thirty-six Hour Day was released and I forgot that the "hold for" prefix was in the title until Monica reminded me. I assumed someone else would pick it up and take a stab at it. Actually, the book was originally held for someone else not even on this list. Another member of this list contacted that person for me and gave me permission to work on the book. I have since rejected the book because there are so many errors in the book that I believe a complete rescan is in order. We'll see what the bookshare staff says. This is my first rejection. The second book held for me was Shut Up and Sing by Laura Ingraham and was a book I specifically requested. I validated the book and it is now in the collection thus showing how the Hold For designation can work effectively.
I'm not saying that I think the "hold for" designation is completely a bad idea; I just feel that perhaps the standards should be tightened up a bit. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx>

Jackie, You are welcome, and you are entitled to express you views--and they are worth something!! The problem of HOld Fors sitting on step one didn't exist as much before there was five-book limit. People downloaded the books and kept them off the step one page. Usually it's books people want to validate but havne't had time to get to them. Sometimes people do forget they're there. SOmetimes the books are not in good shape because the submitter hasn't had time or inclination to prevalidate but the person the book is being held for is willing to do the work involved. But if someone else took the book and saw the shape it's in he/she might reject it. Often, if someone else wants to do the book, he/she can ask on the list if the person it's being held for wants it continue to be held or if he/she can take it. Usually the answer will be yes, because that will get it into the collection faster and anyone can read it--unless the book as problems. smile So if there's a book you'd like to do that's being held for someone else, feel free to ask here if you can take it. smile Cindy --- Jackie McBride <abletec@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:U know, yall, I'm just a newby so a) I don't wanna tick any1 off; & b) therefore this observation doesn't count--but there have been books up there on step 1 for months that say hold for so-&-so. I won't take them, & I think others feel likewise, because first I believe & I think others do also that doing so bespeaks a lack of integrity &, 2nd, well, folks get bent out of shape when a book held for them gets taken. So, there they sit, & somehow that doesn't seem quite right to me. But, like I said, I'm just a newby & what do I know? Still, it seems to me from an admin point of view that this hold for tag should be stripped from a title if not taken in a reasonable period, say 5 days to a week. Probably could be built in2 a crawler or bott or whatever u wanna call it. Obviously there might be exceptions to why a book should be held longer, e.g., it's in a foreign language & there are only a few validators who read that or it requires some sort of specialized knowledge possessed by 1 or only a few validators--but the books whereof I speak do not seem to fall in a category like that. Just a thought, my dad used to say I didn't get paid to think, & yeah, he's probably right--it's likely worth exactly what yall paid for it, but, o, well.
