Hi, Scott. Welcome to volunteering. I'm so glad you've joined us. (smile) In general, doing a rank spelling with Kurzweil can give you an idea of the condition of a scan. If it is below 97 percent, the book will need either a lot of attention or has some sort of problem that might warrant rejection. I often suggest to new volunteers that they might prefer to work on an easy book for their first couple of validations so they can focus on learning how to validate. Books like the one you're describing can be a challenge, even to an experienced validater. I would recommend that you look on the step 1 page for books submitted by Carrie Karnos, Jake Brownell, Mayrie ReNae, or Shelley Rhodes. We have many awesome submitters around here. These are just a few people who submit scans that are clean and easy to validate.

If you see a lot of garbled text throughout the book, text that you can't make out, it's probably a candidate for rejection. However, the absence of maps or pictures is normal with books for Bookshare. If your book has missing pages, you can either post here to ask if someone can scan in the missing pages, or you can reject the book due to missing pages. Books are also generally rejected if there are a lot of lines with missing characters at the beginning or end of the line. Two things that can be fixed with books are headers at the top of pages and, in cases where page numbers are present, missing page breaks. When it comes right down to it, each volunteer has to make up his or her own mind about the rejection process based on what is found while reading the book. I hope this helps you a bit. Merry Christmas.
