Cindy, I think you and I should make it very clear neither of us are old enough to have had gaslights (HA HA).

Thanks, Dan. I wish I'd waited to answer Shelley's questions. smile. What I did find out, though, is apparently the cloth is coated with a chemical, which is why it doesn't burn away instantly. At one point it was magnesium oxide, but it may be something else now. I don't remember exactly and I didn't copy it. I asked my wife about the mantels we use in our bottled gas camping lamps. They work the same way. The mantel is fitted over the gas jet at the top of the lamp. Then before you light the lamp you first burn the mantel with a match. The mantel burns and forms a shell of very pourous ash. Now when you light the lamp the ash becomes very hot and gives off the light. If at sometime the ash of the mantel is caused to crumbole or come off you have to install a new mantel. Interesting that hot ash can put off so much light.----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2007 4:32 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: gas jet lighting > D*** How did I miss that one?
