Actually, a mantel is a woven piece of cloth. it is very loosely woven so that air can pass through it very easily.

I asked my wife about the mantels we use in our bottled gas camping lamps. They work the same way. The mantel is fitted over the gas jet at the top of the lamp. Then before you light the lamp you first burn the mantel with a match. The mantel burns and forms a shell of very pourous ash. Now when you light the lamp the ash becomes very hot and gives off the light.

If at sometime the ash of the mantel is caused to crumbole or come off you have to install a new mantel.

Interesting that hot ash can put off so much light.

D*** How did I miss that one? Very interesting--but
then, I was looking for a more detailed description.
If I'd found that one, though, I'd have known about
the mantle sooner. smile

You will find a description of how lighting has
advanced over time. It
gives a rather good description of gas jet lighting
in Victorian and
Georgian England.

As you will see, originally gas jet lighting was
very poor and anyone trying
to read by it had to place their reading materials
very close to the jet to
be able to read. Later a modification added a
mantle which caused the light
to be brighter and it gave much more light to a
room.

I hope you all find this site to be as informative
and interesting as I did.
