Mayrie, I think this whole font issue arose because some books were being returned to step 1 because the font was too small. Isn't that right? Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mayrie ReNae" <mrenae@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Cindy,

The whole font thing, and lots more is not required. Bookshare has really very few requirements. Some of us do much more than is required because we know how awful the results can be, but are not destined to be, when only the minimum requirements are met. I'm sure you've already read the volunteer manual. It talks about what is required for both submission and validation. And that really is very little.

What you're experiencing here is the struggle between the desire of some to make books as absolutely readable as those offered to the non-print-disabled community, and those who feel that any material that can be read that wasn't available until someone did a raw scan is enough and ought to satisfy. It is really each volunteer's choice where along that spectrum to work.

Just my thoughts. Sorry for going on.

You know, I didn't realize we had to do all of this stuff--change font
sizes and all that. I really thought all we had to do was have
accurate scans. Maybe I'm not going to spend any time doing this
anymore because, gads, if it is all required, I don't have the time.

I don't know if the last book I validated even got up cause I never
heard. Guess I should check. Anyway, since my job is proofreading 35
hours a week now, I may not have time anyway.

Or maybe the problem is just that I don't have time to read this
thread and am just issing something important?

I'm not positive that I understand your question, but I'll try.

One can change font size and type in Word, and I do for chapter titles
and places where the print book has enlarged type, e.g., for store
signs in one book I validated, or newspaper headlines in another. But
my scanner doesn't convert to the exact fonts that are in the book.
For some of the validations I've done I've had to make enlarged fonts
smaller because they don't fit on the page. I was told in the past
that some don't fit properly on people's Braille readers or whatever
they're using to read, also. I seem to remember, and hope I'm not
wrong, that a size of 36 was the largest that would fit. Of course
that would depend on the font style, because some are smaller than
others, but to be safe I don't enlarge anything more than 36.
