Sue's comment gave me an idea -- it wouldn't help if the author's last name is 
mis-spelled, but if one looks for an author by just in putting the last name, 
one sees the list of authors with that last name and 
all the various spellings, and so won't miss a book by the author that one 
might miss if using the first name without a middle initial or, conversely, 
with it, or if the first name is mis-spelled.

That seems to be a very long sentence. I hope it isn't confusing.
