The hard page breaks are also announced in Word 2000 when I down or up arrow across them.

In word, at least in Word 2003 for Windows, the hard page breaks say Page Break right on the line. The soft page breaks are just dotted lines with no words, so just try to ignore the ones that don't say Page Break.
