Dear Lori,

You may be new, but you aren't missing a thing. In fact, I think you just wrote the manual on the subject of page breaks and numbering. . hahahah

There are surprises in almost every book you validate. Your good judgment will kick in and you'll usually get a feeling if you can work with what you have or if something is too far off to patch together!

If the page breaks and numbers seem pretty regular, it's the standard thing to assume they are placed properly.

When I really worry is when there is text missing around the page breaks, but I'd say that they have been very reliable and easy for me to trust in over 95 per cent of the books I've validated.

I did have a book that was great for over a hundred pages. Then there were 2 page numbers and page breaks right together, then 2 pages of text, like this

158

page break

159

page break

When this pattern started, I didn't want to waste all of the validating I'd already done, and I was enjoying the book. I noticed a gap in spacing in the double long blocks of text which I could hear because Jaws said about four blanks there. I put the extra page break and second page number in those blanks and felt very sure the book was in tact. The pattern was there and I didn't mind moving the breaks and numbers to the proper places. This went on for over a hundred pages. In the last third of the book, the breaks and numbers were correct again! It's your time, and you get to decide what is worth the extra work.

I don't fret about what a scanner did or didn't do or could have but didn't do. If I like a project, and have enough to work with, that I can upload a tidy file, I'm excited and proud to be adding another book to the collection. Twice in the two years I've been validating I've rejected a book. In both cases, I was lucky and contacted the scanner. After discussing the problems, I rejected with the scanner's blessing. If I couldn't contact the scanner, I still think of rejecting as a positive thing. It gets the book off step one limbo where it may have wasted many validator's time, and rejecting sets the stage for the book to get a better scan. It just occurred to me that if I like a book that I reject because it looks unsalvageable, I can put it on the wish list where it can get a new scanner's attention.

So, if it's something you feel you can fix, you do, and if the book is chaotic and you are awash in guessing you can reject or put the book back on step one in case you suspect someone can make sense of it.

The cool thing about validating is that you can be free to enjoy your work. If a book gets stressful, you can learn from it, and if it gets too frustrating it's perfectly acceptable to pass it on or shuffle it out of the system.

Always with love,

Lissi

Okay, am I confused or not about this thread.

If I download a book to validate it, I am going to look for page breaks and for page numbers. If both are there, and if the page numbers are in consecutive order, then I am going to assume logically that all is correct.

If on the other hand, I do not find page breaks 90 percent of the time then I am going to reject the book. This situation of a missing page break would be identified if there is a page number at the top of a page but no page break before it or a page number at the bottom of the page with no page break after it.

If I find page breaks and page numbers, but the page numbers are out of sequence, some are missing, then I may need to reject the book, upload it for someone else to look athwho can compare it with the print book, or ask some questions on this list.

But if I see page breaks and sequential page numbers than I have to assume that they match the print pages.

I'm fairly new to volunteering, so am I missing something here!

Huh? Then how does one correct it?

In my opinion, you don't.

Question: how do you know whether the page breaks and page numbers are
correct if you aren't comparing the download to the print copy?

Mayrie,

I think you steps are excellent, only I do them in a
different order. If one reads the book correcting as
one goes, then the first six items on your list are
done while doing the last two, i.e., reading and
enjoying oneself. When I've finished, I do a final
spell-check and, like someone else mentioned, I
usually find a scanno I've missed; and I do a final
page-number check. I've found that sometimes I get so
involved in the story that I've forgotten to put in a
page break or page number or repeated the number.

Hi Nan,

I noticed your message when you posted it,
and have been
pondering it. When I started volunteering for
BookShare, I almost
made for myself the kind of check list that you are
talking
about. Early on, I always felt as though I had
forgotten to do
something. So, I'll give you a list of the things
that I try to do
with a book to make sure that it is in the best
shape that I know how
to make it. It is likely that others will either
add to, or subtract
from this list. I'll try to be concise, as a check
list should
be. If you would like more detailed instructions
for any of the
steps, just ask. I'm absolutely positive that folks
will help
you. They did me. The order in which you do things
is completely up
to you. This is just an idea. I hope that perhaps
it will help you
a little. Now, watch, I'll forget to put something
on the list, just
as I am always afraid that I'll leave some step
undone. My list will be below.

Peace,
Mayrie

Check that all copyright information is present and
legible.
Check that all pages of the book are present.
Remove headers.
Protect page numbers.
Protect chapter titles.
Seek out common scanning errors and correct them.
Do some sort of spell check.
Sit back and read, fixing as you go anything wrong
that any of these
steps missed.
Enjoy yourself!!!
