not to mention we purchase the books to scan here so they get their money at the time of book purchase. Laura Ann At 02:03 PM 8/26/2008, you wrote:
Shannon, I'm sorry this woman lashed out at you. I'm sure that didn't feel very good. While the author does sound offended to me, I can see how she might have trouble with this. Most people on this list don't know it, but there is a brisk trade of illegally scanned books, scanned by sighted people, going on in various parts of the internet. I'm talking about 30,000 books available at one time for unlimited download including prerelease copies of books that haven't even hit store shelves yet. There are some repositories of illegally scanned books numbering in the hundreds of thousands, totally dwarfing what we have with Bookshare or NLS. Unfortunately, Bookshare just sounds like another swapping service to people who don't know what we do or why. Most people are ignorant of the copyright law and its protection of Bookshare. They think that all scanning is illegal, no matter what. So the crooks make it worse for authors by stealing from them and make it worse for us when we're trying to read without breaking the law. I hope Pavi can help this author to see that we are not a threat to her. Indeed, I buy print copies of many books I read through Bookshare as gifts for friends and family members. So I think I profit an author rather than taking a sale from her. Maybe she will come to see that after some thought. -- Monica Willyard Visit my blog at http://www.scannersguild.com To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxput the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
