Scott, If when scanning we eliminate the spaces, would the Daisy format read it as dot, dot, dot the way it does now?

Sue,

I think what happens is that unless the periods are consecutive in print, i.e. with no spaces in between, they will be dots 2, 5, and 6 in braille. If however, you make sure the dots are together, with no spaces separating them, they seem to become the three consecutive single dots in braille.

Did that make sense? I feel like I'm still not quite explaining this right.

But in brf, Scott, we see periods, dots 2, 5, 6. Or are you saying some
programs change that? I just want to know what to do, not start an argument
about brf. <<grin>

When I scan/validate books, if I find a place where there is an ellipsis, I
usually find that the scanning program recognizes the ellipses as a period
followed by a space, another period, a space, and a final period. When I see
this, I will remove the spaces, so there are three consecutive periods with
a space on each side. This seems to give best results, i.e. seeing a single
dot repeated three times in braille rather than random periods.

It is just one dot in Braille, whereas the period is 3 dots. That is, in
the case of true elipses. I am a bit puzzled too as to why, in so many
cases, there seem to be extra periods at the ends of sentences...

I think I missed something, although I ususally read ever post despite the subject line in case the post is about someting else.

But I don't remember seeing anything about replacing
periods with ellipses. Are ellipses Braille for
periods at the ends of sentences? Are they also used
where ellipses are supposed to be, or is there
something else used there?

I think you have just answered something I have been
wondering about, the
replacement of periods with elipses. Did you ask for
Bookshare's approval or
just start doing this? I'm a braille reader too so
don''t know how this is
handled in the Daisy format but surely is annoying
when we see the periods
in braille. Also what are you doing about words that
should be accented but,
of course, are not.
