Hi Alisa, thanks for the info. I had not heard of preview books until after I had posted that and Lissi told me about them. As long as they are marked, I see no problem with including them in the collection. If I had known that the book was coming out and had known that the preview was available prior to publication, I would have checked it out earlier. The only thing is that if I were advising the publisher, I would have told them that including the entire table of contents so that people would see what they'll be getting when the book really does come out would make a preview more exciting.

Hello Evan,

There were some instances of books being added to the Bookshare collection prematurely, as they had been provided to Bookshare by publishers, before being published on the open market. (This was unintentional, and is not done as a practice). However, it looks like you ran across a book preview, which should have been marked as such. If not that was an oversight, I'm sorry for the confusion. We try to ensure those books are marked "preview". I hope this answers your question! (And yes, please do continue leting us know if/when you come across duplicate copies so we can fix the problem).

Kindly,

Alisa Moore

Hi Alisa,

The below message came from a woman whose name may be familiar to you, if
you've been told any stories about past conflicts in the volunteer
community.
E. is Elizabeth Aldworth.
I'm only writing you to give you a heads up that she might be abroad to stir
things up.

To the best of my knowledge, she was never actually barred from
volunteering, and obviously wasn't banned from the volunteer list, as she
posted to it.

But she was very harsh with many other volunteers, was asked repeatedly to
speak more kindly, settled down for a while after each request, but always
popped up hurtful as ever afterward. And that's not to mention how irksome
she was to Bookshare staff.

I've already been contacted by one volunteer asking me to ask you to please
be watchful of her presence.

I suggest that her e-mail address actually be blacklisted from the e-mail
list, but I don't know how that is done.

With any luck, she'll just fade back into the woodwork for another couple of
years.

I just wanted you to know that conflict is possibly coming our way.

Mayrie

Hello Evan,
This is Elizabeth, who volunteered a as a proofreader/validator with
bookshare many moons ago.
You may remember that I have been barred from scanning and submitting books
or from volunteering to proofread books. However, I am still a loyal
borrower of bookshare books.
I also file quality reports with bookshare every time I run across a title
which is entered twice into the bookshare collection.
There are many many such duplicate titles. Please encourage others to file
similar quality reports.
I read your message on the Volunteer List about running across two copies of
a publisher-submitted book.
What I am running across seems to be that same sort of thing.
So, since I am not allowed to communicate on either bookshare list, I do ask you to pass along this message, minus my email address or name. Please just
put the gist of what I say into a message asking others to check for
duplicates and submit quality reports when you folks find them. Bookshare
then sends out a note saying one of the copies has been removed.
Thanks much.

Former Volunteer,
E.

Today I had an odd experience on Bookshare. I downloaded a book called
This Will Make You Smarter edited by John Brockman. I went to Amazon
first to read a bit about it before deciding to check Bookshare. It
said there that the book was published last Tuesday.
So I went to Bookshare and found a PQ copy of the book. I looked it up
under the editor's name, and when I found the title I looked no
further. Interestingly, the date of addition was December 12, 2011.
I was impressed. It seemed that HarperCollins was giving Bookshare
their books even before they were officially published. Well, that
turned out not to be quite the case. After downloading and unzipping
the brf copy of the book, I found that it' was only 22.1Kb in size.
The table of contents had only a couple of the essays in it, and only
what was in the table of contents was in that copy. So I went back up
to Bookshare and entered the title into Advanced search. It was then
that I found two copies of the book, the severely truncated one I had
gotten originally, and the full edition, 545Kb in size for the brf
version, that was added on the same date it was officially published,
February 14.

I don't know how many other instances of this kind of thing there might
be, but I thought I should mention it here. Don't stop when you find
the first occurrence of a book title you're looking for, and if there
is more than one instance, get the one with the most recent date of
addition.
