Jill,
It depends what aspect of format you're talking about. If there are hard
carriage returns everywhere it's okay to remove those because they're
leftovers from the scanning process. But of course you want to keep whatever
formatting represents paragraphs. Font doesn't matter very much, and I'm not
sure how much bold and italics are retained by the conversion processes.
