Shannon,

DO not feel timid about submitting scans.
As has been pointed out, the going rate is $2.50 for
submissions and 50 cents for validations. Scans don't
have to be perfect, but given the disparity on
credits, one would hope that some cleaning up of the
scan before submission would be done. When there are a
lot of broken or unfinished sentences, a lot of junk
characters, words missing from sentences, whole pages
missing here and there, the validator has two choices;
reject the submission or take a lot of time to clean
it up. Somne people, once they've submitted a book
that maybe they've scanned for their own use, won't
re-scan it or even check to see if it's been
accepted--they really don't care. Ane chances are no
one else will, either, so if the book seems to be a
valuable addition to the collection, a validator will
take the time needed to make the book readable.
There's no reason why a scanner can't at least check
to see that all the pages are there and do a
spell-check that would catch many of the common
scanning errors like a rn for m, or the number one for
a capital I.

I agree that individuals shouldn't be named on the
list but should be contacted individually, if
possible--if one can find the individual. I'm sure
it's people who continually submit books with the same
problems that got up E's ire. Most submitters here do
an excellent job--some submit perfect scans and some
not-so-perfect but not really bad. It's frustrating as
a validator to find a book that would be a valuable
addition to the collection--not a Harlequin romance
but a book that would help scholars and students and
people who like nonfiction and want to learn more
about a subject and have to decide whether to spend
the time to fix it up to really make it useful or
reject it.

Anyway, I got sidetracked here--keep on trucking,as we
used to say, and don't feel intimidated and don't stop
submitting.

Oh--btw, in the particular case of Adrienne, I don't
think she reads the list posts, so her feeling won't
be hurt. When she changed jobs a year or two ago it
was hard to find her to contact her individually--I
needed to, and googled her--for anyone interested, her
home page has her e-mail address and a photo, and
there are articles about and interviews with her.
She's quite a woman!

Cindy
