Hi Judy and everyone!

Any cookbook that I have scanned and cleaned up, I have put the ingredients in one column, because, (as mentioned below), it is much easier to read with speech. Otherwise, in a two-column format, there sometimes is the word (optional) on a line by itself, and it can be confusing to know what is the optional ingredient, because I am not sure whether it is the ingredient in the left column or the right column that is optional by just listening.

Also, I have always formatted the index into one column for the same reason, it reads much better with speech. I also make sure that lines are not all run together in an index as if they were a paragraph, because it's a cleaner, more straightforward layout to have each entry in the index on it's own line as it is in the hard copy of the book.

Melissa, I'll confirm, as a sighted reader, that there is no reason for a list of ingredients to be in multiple columns. Turning a list like that into one column is fine, and I'd absolutely do it. When publishers print lists of ingredients in two columns, it's usually for the reason you said--it takes up less space in the printed book.

I do the same thing with indexes in books. The first time I proofed a book with a two-column index in it, Carrie kicked it back to me and explained how difficult columns are to use if you're blind and asked me to change it into a one-column format. Since then I've reformatted every index I've worked on into a single column.

Kim, Honestly I don't see any reason why the list of ingredients can't appear in a single list as opposed to columns. I'm not sure that Bookshare's tools would retain columns, though they might. It is much easier for those using speech to read them in a list. Sighted people, tell me if I am wrong, but I believe the main reason for doing this is so the recipes take up less room. I need to look at some other cookbooks from Bookshare and see how they and the ingredient list. That would give you a good idea of how to do it.

Hi, Jamie, I certainly wouldn't object if the cookbook list was forwarded to the whole group on this list. I think I sent the thing as an attachment. I wouldn't mind proofreading a cookbook if it were just a matter of making it look like what I've seen in Braille from NLS. I don't recall reading any cookbooks in column format in Braille. _Evelyn Lee's Cookbook_ and _Evelyn Lee's New Cookbook_ were the exceptions to the rule. She was a blind cook and Braille Institute published her stuff in Braille. I have no idea if it ever was in print. She had abbreviations peculiar to her, btr. as an abbreviation for butter for instance. I have no idea what daisy cookbooks should look like. If it were just me, and I had the cookbook on my BrailleNote, and I could proofread the thing in Grade two Braille, which is how I'd read the thing anyway, I'd take you up on this. Yeah, pluck my feathers and call me matzo ball soup. (Bak-bak-bak). Regards, Kim.

I was worried CookWise would be too big for my scanner but luckily it's not. Just barely. What I can sometimes do when it's too big, if it is in columns, like this one is, is scan the page twice but it's an awful lot of work. And I imagine it would be a big hassle for someone without sight.

I wonder if Cindy should put your cookbook list on the wishlist in case others can also get them from their library?

I will do more after CookWise but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
