As I stated previously, the best example of accessible content
consolidation
available to the general public that comes to mind right now is Wikipedia.
I am also part of an internal Wiki on my day job.
A Wiki generally allows anyone in the public to search and read its
content,
while permitting its members to discuss and even edit that content,
depending upon privileges configured by its administrators.
Bookshare related information for subscribers and volunteers could be
added
to a Wiki. Anyone could find and read the documents, everyone who signs
up
could also discuss the content and selected administrators and other
volunteers could edit the documents whenever updated information becomes
available. When information needs to be changed, removed or updated, it
is
simply a matter of editing the document online, rather than manually
finding
it offline, editing it using an application like Microsoft Word, figuring
out how to get it back up on the web site and possibly correcting links to
the document.
The ultimate extension of this concept would be a full blown knowledge
base
system, but those are typically not open source, can be quite pricey and
are
just more complexity than is necessary for this project.
Unfortunately, I can't think right now of a good example of the use of a
Wiki in the blind community, as most modern web sites we tend to build are
blogs, full blown content management systems like Drupal or static pages.
Nevertheless, I do think implementation of a Wiki is possibly worth a try.

I wonder if the
Friendsofbookshare.org webmasters might want to consider implementing an
accessible Wiki, such as MediaWiki, as a means of permitting dynamic
maintenance of such documentation? I happen to know a few things about
blogging, CMS, knowledge bases and Wikis, so I am available to help if
approached to do so. I feel this should be undertaken either directly by
Benetech or by the friendsofbookshare.org group, so I don't want to just
go
off on our own completely outside one of these venues.
