If I'm not mistaken, I believe that Kurzweil manual also suggests that
column identification be turned off when using two page scanning. Is that
right, Nick?

When I scan I always have columns turned off and 2 page mode on.

Elizabeth,
In general you want collumn Identification (or Collumn Recognition)on when
scanning two pages at a time since OCR software can occasionally goof and
think it's looking at a page with two collumns and a blank page. If this
happens with Collumn Identification turned on, then you won't get the two
pages mixed together.
Collumn Identification needs to be turned off though when doing the Table of
Contents or other tables and occasionally in sections like glossaries since
the names and definitions can sometimes be in two collumns, but meant to be
read across rather than reading down the first collumn of names then reading
down the second with the definitions.
The problems to look for are:
Pages where Lines have been split in half and the left halves appear before
the right halves due to scanning a page containing two collumns of
information that are meant to be read across like a Table of Contents rather
than down the left collumn then down the right like collumns of text in a
magazine
Tables of data where data is listed a collumn at a time rather than listed a
row at a timedue to having Collumn Identification turned on while scanning
the table
Lines from two different pages being mixed together due to scanning two pages at a time with Collumn Identification turned off
Page breaks missing between even and odd pages due to having Two Page Scanning turned off while scanning two pages at a time with Collumn Identification turned on.

I am scanning a paperback two pages at a time. Please tell me when I want
column identification on, when off and how to check for anything going
wrong. What indicates what? Perhaps this would be a good tip for the tips
site listed below. Perhaps we can put a link to the tips site on the
volunteer bookshare page or make it part of the other unofficial bookshare
site. Thanks.

Hi guys,
I had a few hours free and put together a very simplistic system for
logging/sorting tips based on products. Feel free to check it out. If you
decide to use this system I'd be more than happy to add more bells and
whistles, but I don't want to waste time if no one will use it. Let me
know if you have comments/suggestions/questions.
