Oh, my goodness! It sounds like a fiercesome piece of equipment! Lori C.----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Rains" <scottr@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Roger,Your aversion is shared by everyone here at Bookshare. It is a bit of trial by fire that new volunteers and staff go through here when they "kill" their first book. The machine used to despine books is basically a guillotine powered by an electric motor to press the blade down through thick books. The one at Bookshare is about 3 feet wide by 4 feet deep and has legs that have it standing about three feet off the floor.Places like Kinkos may have such a machine. We have never needed to check. As abibliophile long before I became blind I am aghast at destroying books. However the chopping consists of despining it so that it can be run through a high speed scanner. I don't know what kind of equipment is used to performthe mutilation, but it resides at the Bookshare offices. Those who want to despine their own books would, I suppose, have to use another means. _ _ _ "Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. I have scanned intact books so far except the brain injury book which I owned. That one I: --carefully pulled away from the paperback binding --pulled each page off separately --trimmed any ragged edges, a few pages at a time, with my scissors Do you go to Kinko's or something to get booked chopped?
