Bob, my experience has been that the 'Renew' button doesn't appear until the
day before the book is due. You can renew it at that time.

I just got an automated message from bookshare that
says that my book is about to expire, which is true. The message goes on to
say,
"If you are in the middle of proofreading
the book and would like to complete your work, visit the "My Checked-Out Books"
link after login. Next to the book you are working on you will find links to
Upload, Release or Renew the book. Select "Renew" to be granted 14 additional
days to work on the book. Thank you,
The Bookshare Team".
The only thing
wrong with that message is that there is no "renew" button, but there is a
"rtf"
link.
I got around
the problem by releasing the book then checking it out
again.
But, what
happened to the "renew" button?
