No, jaws will say þ when it comes to that mark.

Bob, Do you mean JAWS won't say thorn when it comes to that mark? If the book were read in braille, I believe the word thorn would be written out. Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob" <rwiley@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I don't know about Braille, but a speech user who is interested in the place names etc. that might have these characters can easily read them with jaws.

What I don't understand is what good it is going to do for either the speech or braille reader to be able to make these marks. Will someone please explain. Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob" <rwiley@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Thanks for the lesson on the þ character.

FYI JAWS calls it thorn when it pronounces it.

Dear Lissi,

It's a German/Scandinavian mark and can be made by alt plus 0254. I don't know if it can be made that way on your machine but that's what it says here: http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm--pr can you copy and paste this: þ

Ah--having been able to copy and paste it into google I've learned more about it thanks to Wikipedia. Anyone not interested can stop reading right now and delete.

It's a letter called Thorn or þorn in Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic alphabets. It was also used in medieval Scandinavia but was replaced with "th." It can be pronounced like the "th" in "thick" or "the."

The Wikipedia article also says it can be made on qwerty keyboard if you have Windows by by typing Alt+0222 (Þ) and Alt+0254 (þ) on the keypad (if you are using Windows). I don't think I can make it on my Mac keyboard. Years ago I made a chart of symbols by trying every combination of keys, but the thorn isn't on it.

HTH

Cindy

Dear Booksharian friends,

Once I have a new accent in, Hush, figured out, the
validation will be
finished and it can join the collection. A 15 year old
Irish princess is
captured and gives a fascinating account of her travel and
treatment as a
slave. The story is straightforward, no convoluted plot,
but you'll learn a
wealth of information about tenth century Ireland, Russia
and the
Scandinavian countries and Iceland. You'll care about
Princess Melkorka and
be awed by the human ability to adapt and survive in what
to us appear to be
unbearable circumstances which can turn better or worse on
a dime.

The problem is a character which looks like a lower case
letter b in which
the vertical line drops half a tall letter's length
straight below the
letter. In other words, a b standing on a straight leg. You
can also view it
as a lower case p with the virtical line extended half a
tall letter's
length above the rounded part. In combination it's like
the rounded part of
a b or p which look the same and rest on the line if
it's written on lined
paper. with the vertical part of a b extended above and the
vertical part of
the p dangling below. Please tell me the name of this
accented figure and
and as a bonus, how to make it.

I've saved a file a Booksharian sent me of how to make
accents in Word 2003
using jaws, but couldn't find that character. I
don't know how to Google it
because I don't know what it's called.

Thanks for your help. I can't wait to add Hush to the
collection. It's an
absorbing story that moves fast, leaving fascinating
factoids in its wake.

Always with love,

Lissi
