No, Lori, the chapter number and title need to be in the same font size and style, so that they are at the same heading level. Sections within the chapter should be at a smaller font size, though still larger than the text of the book.

Okay, so if the book has a chapter number as well as a title, then the chapter number is 16; the chapter title is 14? And what if there are section headings within the chapter?

Lori,
What Bob is talking about is putting the chapter number in 16 point and the chapter title in 14 point, not the chapter title in 16 point and the section headings in 14 point. I hope this makes more since.

Bob, I don't get your point about why it is wrong to change from 16 point to 14 point.

I am currently proofing a book in which I am putting the chapter headings in 16 point and the headings within the chapter in 14 point. Is this correct?

Here has been my experience.

16 pt chapter heading (1, 2, 3...).

16 pt chapter title (suffer, death, resolution, . . .)

With all text at 12 pt, you get division 1 "chapter 1 suffer"
Then some regular text.

Next you get division 1 again, "chapter 2 death".
Then more 12 point text.

And so forth.

This way you can navigate frrom chapter 1 to chapter2 to chapter 3 flawlessly. You also hear the chapter titles at each point.

This next I consider wrong.

16 point chapter 1.
14 point suffer.
16 point chapter 2.
14 point death.
16 point chapter 3.
14 point resolution.

all with 12 point text between.

You navigate to chapter 1, the highest level so far.
Then to the 14 point section with only the dchapterr title.

and so on, and so on.

Hope this makes sense.

Bob

As far as the table of contents thing goes, I don't think we need any direction from staff on that. I think we can--and have--come to a fairly strong consensus on it.

As far as the headers go, I think it would be nice to do some testing to see if different sizes of font within a book will facilitate different levels of Daisy navigation. I don't know if this is definitely known or not. For example, if a chapter title is, say 16 point, that would be at level one; then, if sections of the chapter were at 14 point, would that give level two or not? Or, more generally, what font sizes, and size differentials, are necessary to ensure that different levels of navigation in a book are available. If all this has already been determined by staff, then it would be kind of nice for someone up there to say so rather than leaving all of us guessing.

If this is not known, then I think we at VAT could do some testing to see what happens and settle the matter the way we did for tables.

In my opinion these discussions about headers and elipses in tables of contents have gone on ad nauseum. Obviously we scanners and proofreaders need direction. Can't the advisory team communicate this to staff and come up with guidelines for us that will be stated in the manual? I'm assuming that part of the problem is knowing how best to convert our material into meaningful DAISY format, right?

That is what I do as well. It may not be necessary, but since the title below is always in a larger font, enlarging it is just reflecting how it
is printed in the book.

That's what I do, Lori! Whether it should be or not, I'm not sure but
would
think so! Happy proofing! Have a great day!

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] another question about headings

Hi,

I'm assuming that Part I and Part II, etc in books should be treated as a heading and should have a different size font than the chapters. That
makes
sense to me. My question is, if there is a title under the Part I does
the
information below the Part I also need to be in the alternate size font
and
bolded?

Thanks,
Lori M.
