Dear Dave, and Booksharian Friends,

Roger Caras is one of my real life heroes. His voice at the Westminster Dog Shows every February always sounded so indulgent and fond no matter what breed he was describing. When I think of him, which is often, I visualize a couple of rescued greyhounds who took possession of he and his wife's bed every day. Because they are so lean, Greyhounds crave very soft, warm places to drowse, and Roger and his wife didn't begrudge them their bed. He always said it was a constant source of unease that he new he could never rescue all of the Greyhounds who were being destroyed because not enough adoptive homes were found for them. He also confided that while he deeply loved pets, he knew there were only so many his family could adopt while keeping the integrity of their home and give the animals enough love. He knew it would surprise people to know that his wife and children regularly begged to save just one more dog or cat and it was he who sorrowfully but firmly had to maintain limits.

Now, I warn you I'm going to get maudlin. When it comes to dogs, I thought of his voice as being the voice of their God, as some people think of Charlton Hesston as being the embodiment of the human God. I'd calmly put my fate into the keeping of a God with a voice like Roger Caras. I hope you all realize I say this with a casual wistfulness, not as some sort of inspired proclamation.

About books for the collection, obviously I'd welcome any of Roger Caras' books.

This isn't news to people who know me well, but my book wish list is at least as long as Kelby's! Sometimes books I'm hoping will be added correspond with wishes of others and sometimes they are little known books. I steadily network to enlist the help of other volunteers to scan books for me to validate and gladly send them the books if they can't get them from the library.

What's wonderful is that Bookshare allows us to act on our wishes. Inaccessible books are inaccessible no more! And with the staff and so many of us working together, books are steadily being added to the collection that I would have wished for if I'd known about them.

While we continue to tweak the system to make a fabulous service better, and continue to give as much of our time as we can to add new books, I already have more than I can read, and the thrill of knowing the store of books I look forward to reading grows every day!

I deeply appreciate Bookshare and all of you who are so kindly donating your concentrated effort to prepare accurate, supremely readable, books to the collection.

Always with love,

Lissi

This isn't a recommendation for particular animals, but an author. I've noticed we don't have any books by Roger Caras in the collection, and I think you'd enjoy his books.
