Contacting KES sounds like a good idea. You might want to go to their list archives and search for similar problems being mentioned. Is it the kes file type you're having trouble with? I don't know about the backup situation. It has always seemed like a wise investment of my time for the extra few seconds it takes to go to Save As instead of just Save to change 1 character in the file name, and then the bit of extra time for the clean-up phase. The only major problem with doing this is if you are short on disk space, but now-a-days with massive hard drives being fairly inexpensive, and the less than economical storage and size of most Windows software packages, you probably shouldn't be cutting things that close as bad things can happen if you max out your primary hard drive.

Hi,

They're not in any file form when I get them, I'm scanning a book. I save them in .kes while I'm scanning them and change it to .rtf before sending them to Bookshare. You're right, I don't do any backup, I just scan and read for a while and then do other things and come back to it the next day or whatever. I sure don't want to get involved in backups and all that just to scan a book. Anyway, I thought I'd call Kurzweil Monday and see what they say.

We need a bit more information on this one. What program are you using to edit? What file format are they in when you get them? What file format do you save in while working on them? I know at this point you probably don't want to hear it, but backups are good! When I edit, I always save my most recent changes to a new file name, e.g.. book1.rtf, book2.rtf, etc. I do this as disaster prevention, so when I do something dumb, like oh ---- I really didn't mean to do that, or when something dumb finds me, as in your case, I haven't lost all my effort. I guess I'm what my mother would have called a belt and suspender kind of person. When I submit, I zip the rtf, keep the most recent rtf and zip, ditch the rest, and keep both until I see the book on the new page list.

Hi Gang,

This has happened to me several times in the past and I have never been able to revive it. I just finished scanning a book for Bookshare and had gone through it and cleaned it up and it was just about ready to send on to Bookshare and now when I try to access it it says "an error occured while opening the file, the format could not be determined. I worked hard to get the book scanned and ready for Bookshare and then that happens. Anybody have any ideas as to what causes that and what I can do to avoid it or how I can redeem this one?
Thanks.
