I have been on vacation, then got sick, and am only just getting caught up on my email, so I could be completely off base, but I, like G.Cindy, think that if Bud could send a sample to the list, it might be very helpful. At least to me, it sounds like it could be the OCR software converting spaces to dashes due to the age of the paper or some quirk of the font used. But it could also be a quirk of the author, not the font. So, a sample (text, or better an attached copy of a tiff file of the raw scan) of a page or two would help, I think.

Hi all,Liz is right. You can't ditch them. Sorry. You can replace the M-dash with two dashes, but you can't get rid of them because that's what the author wrote.Ann P.
