Hi Evan,

I have also had the page breaks appear in the middle of the book as well as at the end. I'm glad that they're only appearing for you at the end. Much easier to find and remove. I hope it continues for you that way.

I hope for all of us that this pain in the delete button is something that the K1000 developers feel is important enough to fix. They have acknowledged that they know of the existence of the problem, but I haven't heard anyone say they are planning to fix it.

Ah, well, never mind. I'm just complaining again.

Peace,
Mayrie

I have had the same problem with version 11, but the extra pages seem to only be those at the end of the book. That is, it sometimes seems to repeat the last x number of pages in the book, x being some random number. So far, that number has gotten up to 25 on one occasion. I wasn't aware of this problem - as Bob says, "not reproducible on a consistent basis" - until I found out thanks to a conscientious validator who told me that the last three pages of a book I had submitted had been repeated. Now I keep a look out for that. I take careful note of the number of pages in any rtf file I open, and make sure that that number has not changed - assuming no extra page breaks were added or removed by me intentionally during validation - just before I send it up to the Admin Queue.

Hi Mary.

I'm using v10.x of Kurzweil (I'm not sure of the x, but it's the latest available version before eleven).

I have encountered scads of junk pages at the end of an .rtf file saved from K1000 a couple of times, but it's not reproduceable on a consistent basis.

My immediate approach is to first open an .rtf file in word, change all section breaks to page breaks and save it. Then I can edit it with k1000. The last thing I do is to save the file as an .rtf file in k1000, then reopen it in word, check the bottom for extraneous pages, put a space somewhere in the file, take the space out, and save the file from word.

Lots of little changes in there that may, or may not, have any effect on the final product, but they seem to help.

As I said in an earlier post, validating has turned out to be a learning experience, and I'm continuing to learn and to experience.

Hi Bob,

I'm curious, will you tell us, please, what version of Kurzweil you are using? It has been my experience that rtf files not created by K1000 and opened with K1000 version 11 often acquire scads of inappropriate page breaks. If you are using an earlier version, you may not have this problem. I never did using version 9.

Also, I'm still experimenting with this, but I think that upon the first opening of an rtf file not created with K1000 using K1000 version 11, there are no added page breaks. It is my guess that if you save the file with a slightly different name while you are in K1000 during the first opening of the file, and work from that file with the slightly altered file name to do your proofreading and making corrections, you will not encounter the pesky added page breaks. What this means to me is that I can edit in K1000 if I want to without worrying about having to find and remove extra page breaks, no matter how many times I need to open the file.

It is possible that this doesn't work 100% of the time. I haven't experimented enough to know for sure. I just thought that others might want to try it. And if I'm just cluttering the list, or confusing people, just delete this and I'm sorry.

Peace,
Mayrie

Thanks Lissi, and Carrie who wrote me off list.

Actually, I have some egg on my face, but not much since validating is a learning experience, and I sure am experiencing learning.

Carrie told me off list that the book had section breaks when she submitted it. So, I went back to the very beginning--I keep the original zipped file I download so I can start over if necessary.

I opened the .rtf file in msword and, did as Lissi suggested and made sure I was in normal view. Sure enough, those pesky section breaks had appeared miraculously once again.

I think what had happened originally was that I first opened the book in Kurzweil anxious to start editing, and that's where the section breaks disappeared.

So, this time, I changed all the section breaks to page breaks and saved the file. This time when I opened the file in Kurzweil, the pages broke exactly where they were supposed to.

So, that's my story--and I'm sticking to it. The book was edited and uploaded for approval in about two hours, thanks to Carrie for a great scan to begin with.

Dear Bob,

There's a chance I can help you find your missing page breaks.

This week I began work on a novel by one of our very competent submitters. I was shocked to find it didn't have page breaks. I thought I'd insert them in Microsoft word 2003 by using control with enter, but this only added another blank line. I was in the process of e-mailing the submitter to ask if I released the book back to page one she would examine it to see what was wrong. The book was an RTF file so I reasoned it should have page breaks as all of her books have had in the past.

Then, just in time before I sent the post, I remembered the trick of alting to the menu, right arrowing to view and entering on normal. I hopped to the file and in 3 keystrokes the page breaks were in place!

I don't understand why this works, but sometimes it's all that is needed to make invisible page breaks appear. I was also able to edit the file as usual and could add page breaks with control enter, though now I didn't need to. I've validated 50 pages today, reading as I go and enjoying the book hugely.

I'm about to shut my computer down for the night. I hope the best case scenario transpires and that in the morning I read that your page breaks were there all along as mine were.

Good luck.

Always with love,

Lissi

Hi.
I am currently validating "assignment in eternity" by Robert Heinlein.

The book seems to have several small scanning errors (the comes out as die, and, therefore, then comes out as dien). These are small and infrequent, so I should be able to take care of them easily enough.

The problem is that the book has a running title at the top. Odd numbered pages have the name of one of the stories followed by a page number. The even numbered pages has a page number followed by "Robert a. Heinlein".
The book has no section breaks or page breaks.

I think the book has about 300 pages in it.

I have tried searching for text (either a story name, or the author's name). I can find them okay in word, but I can't do a global find and replace because I don't know how to get back to the beginning of the line and insert a page break.

My question is, how would you handle this book? Am I doomed to work on it for the rest of my existence as a sane individual? Am I making a mountain out of a moll hill?

What do you say?

I await your words of wisdom.

Bob
